Last month, over 108,000 people from over 208 countries, flooded to Barcelona to attend the highly anticipated Mobile World Congress 2017. From connected cars to brand new apps, devices to privacy protection solutions, this year’s event showcased some brilliant tech. Here’s a quick recap of the entire event:

4 Years From Now – Best British Mobile Startup 2017

We held our ‘Best British Mobile Startup 2017’ competition at the ‘4 Years From Now’ congress.

Startups, investors and business owners were brought together to see our finalists, Appy Parking, BigChange Apps, SafeToNet, and Voxpopme, pitch to a panel of industry leaders in a bid to win the coveted title.

All finalists were worthy of the prize, but there could only be one winner and Internet security startup SafeToNet took home the crown!

Dedicated to protecting children from the dangers of the Internet, this self-learning software was a well-deserved winner.

“It’s been an honour. To have the chance to stand up there, gives us great exposure.” Said Richard Pursey, CEO

Congratulations to SafeToNet and the finalists this year!

GSMA Innovation City

The GSMA Innovation City took centre stage as an immersive city-structure addressing industry hot-topics such as 5G, Internet of Things (IoT) and security.

Visitors gained snippets of what the future holds for mobile technology, and were able to try out the latest gadgets to understand how this tech could really transform their day-to-day lives. Our favourite was the ‘Internet of the Seas – Connected seals’ showing how tech could monitor the well being of marine mammals better than ever before.

YoMo

YoMo was created to encourage children in pursuing a career in the mobile tech industry. More than 11,000 children aged 10-16 flocked to the Mobile World Congress to learn how important careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Design/Art and Math (STEAM) are to the mobile industry.

We have no doubt that some of the mobile tech leaders of the future were sat in that hall. Hopefully we’ll see them again in a few years time!

Keynote speech by Reed Hastings

The highly anticipated speech by Netflix’s CEO and founder was well worth the wait. He described how content is in the midst of a period of disruption and change, meaning mobile tech falls into the new world of content acquisition.

When asked what the future held, he predicted that Artificial Intelligence would be an integral part of everyday life, and even suggested that humans may augment with AI eventually.

The Global Mobile Awards (The Glomos)

This year, 40 game-changing services, devices, apps and technologies were awarded with the prestigious Glomos.

There were lots of worthy winners, but one that stood out was Owlet Baby Care. The winner of ‘Best Mobile Innovation for Health’ created a sock that monitors babies and delivers data straight to parents so they don’t have to worry

Here’s a run down of the other winners and who to keep an eye out for in 2017.
